The mistake companies make when trying to improve employee wellness at work.
In recent years, more workplaces have started implementing wellbeing initiatives for their employees, but too many are making a big mistake. That’s because employee wellness can be a complex topic for bosses to understand.
Coinadrink Limited the vending machine company will simplify the mistake you could be making and explore methods that can make a valuable difference.
This matters even more now businesses are starting to welcome their team back to their natural working environment.
Firstly, it’s a good idea to make it clear that it’s not all bad news here.
The fact that more businesses are understanding the value of employee wellness is good news. You have a duty to care for the wellbeing of your team. When at work, all aspects of their life should matter to you.
Poor mental health can impact wellbeing, participation and productivity in the workplace. Approximately 15% of everyone in the workforce, at any given moment, has at least one existing condition that they try to manage.
So, it’s great news that more businesses are recognising the problem and making wellbeing initiatives easily accessible. From counselling opportunities to mindfulness programmes, there is a lot that companies are doing.
But is it just the tip of the iceberg in trying to promote better mental health and employee wellness?
Coinadrink Limited the vending machine company recognises the importance of workplace wellbeing and how this tightly integrates with company culture.
We’re not here to play down what you may be implementing in your workplace, but we can help you refine and enhance those methods.
Employee wellness is not a straightforward topic.
There are so many layers to improving employee wellness. You need to start at the root of the problem. Pro-active measures are always better than reactive solutions.
While companies are providing benefits like access to wellness apps, therapy sessions and mindfulness programmes, that doesn’t mean that workers will take advantage.
That’s because there is still a stigma attached to mental health. Too many people don’t want to talk about their problems.
This isn’t ideal and never has been, of course, but you can still promote a better workplace that helps them deal with the problems they are having on their own terms.
Encouraging them to talk is important, but this doesn’t have to come across as formal through pre-planned programmes and sessions.
The importance of an environmental adjustment.
A supportive working environment is arguably the most effective step to implement. In many ways, offering your team ongoing support whilst they’re working in an unhappy environment is like putting a plaster on a broken leg.
By all means continue to provide sessions and programmes if they work but transforming your working environment should always be the first step.
An employees’ workload plays a big role in their overall health and wellbeing. Work is work but finding ways to manage that workload is important. Employees need to feel like they are in control of their schedule.
Teamwork is a nice characteristic to promote here. Relationship building that conforms to social distancing guidelines could be an option. Regular assessment of whether there’s balance between job loads contributes to meaningfully lower levels of stress, anxiety and burnout.
Think about your workplace. Do you have dedicated break out areas that make it easy for employees to take a time out with colleagues?
A recent study suggested this would be a valuable employee perk. 65% of those surveyed said exactly that, but you also need to develop locations that are meaningful.
A coffee machine could be a nice facility to implement, as well as charging ports for staff to keep in touch with what matters in their personal lives.
Barbara Harvey, Managing Director of Accenture Research and the lead for Accenture’s research on workplace equality, says supportive organisations can often see a drop in mental health issues by 40%.
Focusing on the root cause of mental health problems can be complex but changing the culture of your company can be a great start.
And employers that focus on creating a more supportive overall culture may find their employees more willing to take advantage of the other wellness benefits the company is investing in.
In supportive organisations, Harvey’s team found, people found it easier to talk about mental health, and were more likely to know where to go for help and advice.
This can be informal breaktimes with colleagues, not necessarily pre-arranged programmes remember.
