The bid to provide clean water for all on Water Quality Month.
August is dedicated in part to water quality month, which raises awareness about how we can make sure water is free from pollution for all. The last couple of months in the UK have seen some searingly high temperatures, but we often take clean drinking water for granted.
Water sustains all life and is critical for every ecosystem, yet there are still parts of the world that don’t have the luxury of clean drinking water. This water quality month, find out some facts and stats and learn more about what you can do to protect sources of fresh water.
The purpose of water quality month.
From 2005, the United Nations declared an “International Decade of Action” to raise awareness of the importance of water quality. Not just to stay hydrated, but also its impact on sanitisation, urbanisation, and basic human rights.
The initiative certainly helped, with around 2.6 billion people having gained access to an improved water source since 1990. Despite this there is still work to be done. It is still believed that there are 2 billion people who are forced to consume dirty water, which causes devastating disease and is largely what’s keeping communities trapped in a cycle of poverty.
Poor water quality is a luxury for so many when it shouldn’t be. Over the years there have been charities working hard for change, though their efforts remain ongoing.
It’s important that we don’t take water for granted, either. In the UK the average person uses 142 gallons of water every day, whilst those in poorer countries must walk for miles for even just a drop. The scorching summer that we’ve experienced so far will have only added to our consumption, courtesy of paddling pools, using the hosepipe, and generally drinking more water.
Protecting our water resources and educating ourselves about water quality is a key part of water quality month.
