Pancake Day – The one time throwing food around the kitchen is acceptable!
The day of delight is now upon us. As Valentine’s Day has come and gone, and the harsh treatment of Storm Doris is set to be replaced by Storm Ewan, the Nation needs a distraction, and what better one is there than Pancake Day?! Yes, it’s that time of the year again, and while you’re wondering whether you’ll be able to get that all-important flip just right, let’s take a look back as to how this tasty occasion began.
While many of us know the event as Pancake Day, the more religious of people will refer to it as Shrove Tuesday. Today is genuinely a very faithful day in the calendar, with the word Shrove meaning ‘to confess your sins’ or to ‘ask for forgiveness’, and is regarded by Christians as an opportunity to clean the soul. Arriving on the last day before lent, or Ash Wednesday, typical celebrations involve indulging yourself in a mighty feast, using up all the fatty ingredients before you’re required to abandon them for a while.
Pancake Day arrives 47 days before Easter which means the date can vary from year to year, but it’s always guaranteed to be upon us between February 3rd and March 9th. So at least you get some idea of when you can stuff your face!
