It’s National Sandwich Day, so celebrate the love of the great British food!
Today is National Sandwich Day, a day to recognise one of the most popular lunch time choices not just in Britain, but all over the world. Sure, our Nation certainly takes the credit for such an invention, but it’s testament to how good the sandwich is to see its popularity now extend much, much further. We all have our individual favourite, but it’s important to understand that the sandwich, and the likes of Subway to go with it, wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for a certain gentleman known as John Montagu…
Of course, this hasn’t been officially confirmed, and the rumour derives from a contemporary travel book titled Tour of London by Pierre Jean Grosley which states that the sandwich was first invented at a gambling table. It is believed that John Montagu was a keen gambler, and he couldn’t find the time to enjoy a meal during his long hours at the card table. His reasoning was unclear, but when hungry he would ask his servants to bring him slices of meat between two slices of bread. It soon caught on with other gamblers around the table, and they began ordering ‘the same as sandwich’. The rest, as they say, is history.
The verb ‘to sandwich’ is 200 years old, and was first used in 1815 to mean ‘to have a light meal’. It is believed that the Americans eat more than 300 million sandwiches every day, which is a remarkable statistic when you consider that there only slightly more than 300 million Americans in the world! Over here in the UK, more than £7.5 billion a year is spent on sandwiches alone. There are so many different variations of the sandwich, and our individual favourite differs. According to a survey by Lurpak, the most common choice for office workers is a cheese sandwich, with a ham sandwich and chicken sandwich the next in popularity. With regards to the chicken sandwich, did you know that six chicken sandwiches are eaten in the UK every second?
