The importance of mental wellbeing in the workplace.
It’s a worrying reality that many of us continue to only associate physical symptoms with our health. If we’re suffering with a bug, flu or even a headache, we know something isn’t quite right, but the topic of mental health isn’t quite as clear. While it’s fantastic to see that the stigma behind mental health is slowly lifting, some people still find it hard to talk about their feelings. As an employer or Facilities Manager, there are things that you can do to help the cause. It’s important to create a positive workforce where your staff feel happy and comfortable.
What is wellbeing?
The term ‘wellbeing’ gets split into two categories: mental and physical. Mental wellbeing describes your mental health, which is how you are feeling and your ability to cope with day-to-day life. There are so many factors that can affect your day to day life from your living conditions to your relationships, so it really stems down to how happy you generally feel. Everyone can get down from time to time, but it is how often you feel down and how easy you find it to lift your spirits again that are important things to keep track of.
Importance of mental wellbeing on your health.
It goes without saying that this is vital. Mental health is just as important as your physical health, but as previously explained, it doesn’t get the awareness and understanding that it needs. A positive mental state allows us to have an equally positive outlook on life, creating and solidifying relationships with those around you. You’ll find yourself coping with the stress better, and they’ll be a dramatic decrease in your experience of anxiety. In addition to this, studies show that poor mental health is linked to increased risk of diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes.
Importance of mental wellbeing on your productivity.
Your mental health plays a key role in your productivity level, which becomes most apparent in the workplace. As an employer, you crave a high productivity level from your workforce, but this can be affected if you were to ignore the impact of mental health in your workplace. Facts show that as many as 1 in 6 employees will struggle with the effects of mental health at some point in their working lives and on average, employees take 21 days’ sick leave every year for mental health problems that include depression and anxiety.
Even when in the workplace, productivity will be low. If wellbeing has taken a hit, your staff are not in the best position to reach your potential, which means workplace result will suffer. Common symptoms of poor wellbeing include tiredness, irritability and having little or no energy, which says it all about the position they’ll be in to do their job.
Help your workforce with their wellbeing.
Mental health is much more apparent than a lot of us think, and there’s a lot you can do to raise the morale of your workforce as an employer. A positive attitude is key to positive wellbeing, so introducing benefits to your workforce would be a great way to start.
Flexible working options will allow your employees to manage the inevitable stresses of their personal lives with their job. Childcare often poses a big problem, and allowing your staff to work around their other responsibilities allows them to keep on top of everything. Additionally, you could also look at integrating mental health and wellbeing policies and procedures in your business, allowing staff somewhere to go and talk about their problems in a confidential environment. Raising awareness of wellbeing in the workplace is key to improving it.
Ensuring your employees enjoy the atmosphere of their workplace can go a very long way to improving their mental wellbeing. Proving that you care about their health is important, and that’s where we may be able to help.

We created the UK’s first Micro Market back in 2013, an unmanned, self-service convenience store for the workplace that is centralised around the wellbeing of your employees. We design the market to suit the space you have available, and we can even tie it into your break time area. This allows your staff to wind down for their break in a ‘refreshment hub’, increasing morale and strengthening workplace relationships.
