Veganuary is an annual challenge that encourages you to go vegan for the whole of January. Veganism is a popular trend that continues to grow, with over 500,000 Brits taking part in 2021.

The background behind Veganuary.

Veganuary was first concocted in January 2014. It was formed by a not-for-profit organisation that values our planet and all its inhabitants.

Each year, the organisation encourages people to go vegan for 31 days, in the hope you will appreciate the benefits and make a permanent change thereafter. Veganuary also works hard with businesses to make vegan choices more widely available.

Veganuary receives a lot of attention in the media, which in turn gets the word out about the benefits of a vegan diet and how to make a success of this lifestyle change.

Following the 31-day challenge last year, 98% of people who took part said they would recommend it to a friend.

The benefits of going vegan.

Lots of people turn their noses up at the prospect of going vegan, but there are lots of benefits. Contrary to wide belief, there’s also a lot of tasty choices.

• Good for the environment.

According to Joseph Poore, a lead author of a 2018 study in science that analysed the impact of almost 40,000 farms worldwide, going vegan is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on our planet. Not only do vegan diets produce fewer greenhouse gases, but they also help conserve essential resources such as water and land.

• Good for your health.

Embracing a vegan lifestyle can lower your sugar intake and drive a healthier heart. Plant-based foods contain minimal sugar quantities, especially compared to heavily processed foods. These foods can also be high in saturated fat, which in turn can lead to high cholesterol according to the American Heart Foundation.

• A healthy way to lose weight.

Some animal products such as red meat and dairy are extremely high in both calories and fat. If losing weight and getting fitter are some of your new years’ resolutions for 2022, then studies show vegan diets are one of the most effective ways to maintain weight loss. They even suggest veganism is more beneficial than the vegetarian diet in this sense.
