October is Fairtrade month…so here’s the entire Fairtrade product range.

A few weeks back we mentioned that October is the month of Fairtrade; an entire four weeks dedicated to raising awareness of such a fantastic organisation. The first instance of Fairtrade was found in 1946, and it has been ensuring that workers in poorer countries get a better deal for the hard work that they put in ever since. It’s a common myth that Fairtrade is purely based around coffee farmers, but the reality is that it extends to a much broader product range. For the second Fairtrade blog this month, learn about them all below…

Bananas
One in three bananas bought in the UK is Fairtrade certified. Thanks to the work of Fairtrade, buying bananas in the UK means the producers are guaranteed a minimum price, get an extra premium to invest in their community and have improved workplace conditions and protection.
Chocolate
Previously, cocoa farmers found life tough. The price of the beans had fallen due to the damage of cocoa trees and fewer young people were becoming farmers due to the poorer prospects. Fairtrade helps farming in Ivory Coast and Ghana more sustainable through guaranteed minimum prices and providing a premium to invest in local communities.
Gold
Fairtrade Certified Gold is the world’s first independent ethical certification system for gold. By purchasing a Fairtrade registered product, you will be making the lives of miners and their families better by giving them a fairer price for financial security.
Coffee
This is the obvious product. Not only does Fairtrade give coffee farmers a better quality of life, but it also ensures your coffee will taste better for the future. 25% of their Fairtrade premium goes towards improving the quality, whilst the rest of the funds help the farmers in their battle with a changing climate.
Cotton
Buying your clothes made with Fairtrade materials not only means you look good, but you’ll also be supporting the cotton farmers around the world. While the cost of purchasing cotton has rose in recent years, Fairtrade ensures that the workers receive a fair and stable price.
Flowers
Fairtrade flowers show you care…to the recipient and to the producer. There are almost 50,000 flower workers working with Fairtrade to get a better deal, and the range of flowers are extensive to say the least. Fairtrade provide a premium of 10% to allow workers to invest in healthcare, education and other social benefits.
Sugar
It’s hard to live without sugar, but by choosing Fairtrade, you can make life a little sweeter for the farmers who produced it too. The farmers are from Nations such as Belize and Zambia, and Fairtrade allows them to take control of their own lives whilst improving their community and environment.
