Dehydration. Something even medication won’t cure.
Staying hydrated isn’t a case of simply relieving your thirst. It’s about staying fit, staying healthy and staying productive, and consuming the appropriate level of fluids will work wonders for your overall wellbeing. Too many people are mistaking poor health as an illness, when it could simply be a case of even slight dehydration. You only need to lose just 1% of your water intake to fall into the depths of dehydration, and symptoms of so are unpleasant to say the least. They also merge with those you get from feeling ill, so this leads to some confusion as to the cause of your problems.
The confusion between illness and dehydration.
Our bodies need maximum fluids to perform to their highest capability. This is deemed to be around 8 glasses consisting of 8 ounces, which equates to approximately 2 litres, though this may change depending on gender, physique, conditions and activity. When we are not receiving the required amount of fluids, our bodies will warn us. Symptoms include but are not limited to:
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Lethargy
- Dry Skin
- Dry Mouth
As you can imagine, these are also symptoms that are tied to other health conditions. This is where the confusion lies, and it leads to us reaching for over the counter pain relief and booking appointments to see our local GP. The latter wastes time and money that we are frequently told the country has limited access to.
We’re not saying that you shouldn’t pay a visit to your GP if you’re concerned, but what we are saying is spend a week ensuring you’re consistently hydrated. You might just feel the difference…
The facts behind sick days in the workplace…
They make for concerning reading. Facts taken from the Health and Safety Executive website show the following:
- 2 million working days lost due to a work-related illness and workplace injury (2016-17)
- £14.9 billion estimated cost of injuries and ill health from current working conditions (2015-16)
Are you sure you’re not just dehydrated?
We know the importance of remaining hydrated, but too many of us ignore the warnings. We automatically reach for a paracetamol when we have a headache, but it may just be a case of not drinking enough water. Water can be considered a super fuel, so next time you feel a little under the weather, reach for a glass of water first. We’re not saying it will be a magic cure, but it’s worth a try.
