PART ONE: Stick to what you do best

ROGER
Coinadrink MD, Roger Williams

People often ask me ‘Roger, how come you never expanded the business and set up in London?’ It’s a fair question, but the truth is, I never really thought about it. Don’t get me wrong, I could see the attractions that were luring some of my competitors down to ‘the Smoke’. At the time, it seemed vending operators could virtually charge what they liked. Similar contracts could earn you double down there what they’d earn you in Walsall, Wednesbury or Wolverhampton in those days.

I thought, ‘stick to what you do best’, and I realised that what I did best – what Coinadrink did best – was provide a vending service with a personal touch to customers in and around our base in the West Midlands. So, that’s what we did and I’ve never regretted it.

When the going gets tough, asking yourself again what it is that you do best can often kick-start a change round in your fortunes. Continue reading “WWW? It’s ‘The Wise Words of Williams!’”

Here’s One Dream That Did Come True… Thanks To You

Remember when we asked you to fill out a Customer Care survey and we promised we’d donate £5 to charity for every completed form? Well, if you took part, this is where the fiver you generated ended up…

You’ve probably never heard of Leigh’s Syndrome.  It’s a rare inherited neurometabolic disorder, which affects the central nervous system.

Olivia is sixteen years old and if you click on the ‘Leigh’s syndrome’ link above, you’ll get some idea of what she has to live with; but be warned: it’s not, in any sense, an easy read just as hers is not, in any sense, an easy life…

Olivia loves her iPad 🙂

It’s heartbreaking, but the irrefutable fact is that hers is a ‘life limiting condition’; it means she’s a semi – permanent resident at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. You wouldn’t choose it as a venue for your 16th birthday party, but that’s what circumstances dictated: Olivia needs constant care and supervision. New Kids On The Block

Coinadrink is delighted to welcome on board new recruits Samantha Woodhall and Tom Williams. Here’s the inside track on the new kids on the block…

Ask any manager in any discipline and they’ll all agree: a good team needs a mixture of youth and experience.

Most of our customers know that we ‘tick the box’ when it comes to experience. (You can read about our longest serving employee, Norma Graham, here and about how the list of eligible attendees for our annual Long Service Dinner keeps on growing here, for example).

But you may not know that recently, we’ve added a pinch of youth, energy and talent to our winning recipe, in the form of two new recruits, Sam Woodhall and Tom Williams, both of whom have long standing connections to Coinadrink.

Sam used to work for Iceland Frozen foods, which she describes (tongue in cheek), as ‘interesting and good for manning yourself up for the real world – long hours and hardly any days off!’ Continue reading “New Kids On The Block”

‘Never Give Up On A Good Thing…

Remember what makes you happy.’ That’s how the song goes – but is that the reason Norma’s still on the payroll after almost 45 years?

When you’ve been in the job for as long as Norma Graham, you don’t need to be micro-managed. In fact, her colleagues see her just once a year at best – and that’s at the Christmas ‘do’.

You see, Norma is our longest serving employee. We’re not allowed to tell you how old she is, (76 and three-quarters), so let’s say that when she first got the job, England were the reigning football World Champions. It was 1970…

‘Sisters, sisters, there were never such devoted sisters… ‘ That’s Norma far left.

‘Mick pleaded with me to ‘just do another week for us.’ I think he’d have preferred to have a midwife to go round with me.’ Norma Graham
