National Tea Month – Some facts and figures.
January is dedicated to National Tea Month, and we recently sent out a blog on which of our machines can dispense the perfect brew. That can be found here. This blog is a light-hearted article about some interesting facts and figures on tea, many of which you won’t have known…
Tea is good for you!
We thought we’d start with this one due to how many people love a good brew! Rest assured that your addiction to the hot beverage is largely a healthy one, provided you enjoy it in the correct manner. Tea contains ‘polyphenols’, which are antioxidants that repair cells. In turn, drinking tea can help our bodies fight diseases such as cancer and diabetes. Tea also contains just half of the amount of caffeine as what’s in coffee.
Your brew began in China…
Of course, the exact foundations of tea are unknown, but it is strongly believed to have begun in China. The story is that herbal enthusiast Shen Nung was drinking boiled water beneath a Camellia Sinensis plant, when some leaves blew into his mug. Upon trying the new mix, ‘tea’ was created. Whether you believe this or not, your brew can still be traced back to China before anywhere else. Containers for tea have been found in tombs dating from the Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD)
The popularity of tea in the UK.
Tea made its way to UK shores in the 1600’s, at a time when the UK was importing goods from outside of Europe. Needless to say, it caught on quickly. By the 18th century, tea became Britain’s most popular beverage, replacing ale and gin as the drink for the masses. Today, it is believed that 165,000,000 cups are consumed in the UK every single day! 98% of people take their tea with milk, but only 30% take sugar.
The amount of caffeine in your brew.
There is roughly 3% of caffeine in 250ml of tea. Black tea holds the highest amount of caffeine at around 22-28 milligrams to 1 gram. Compare this to coffee, which has 47 to 75 milligrams of caffeine, and tea has significantly less. For many people who don’t enjoy a drink with such a high caffeine content, this is a much better option.
India is the world’s biggest tea producer!
India is by some way the largest tea producer in the world, with 1,930,000 tons of the stuff produced here. This is followed by China (1.2 million) and Kenya (440,000). Asia is the continent that produces most of the tea overall, with a total output of around 4 million tons!
