“Coffee” and “sustainability” are two words that have never historically been put together. Largely down to coffee cup recycling and the issues surrounding it, the industry has received its fair share of criticism for far too long now.
At Coinadrink Limited the vending machine company, we are determined to turn the tables and prove that both coffee and vending can play its part towards a sustainable future. We talk you through our trusted partnerships and bespoke solutions.
Coffee cup recycling.
Coffee cup recycling in the UK has always been a touchy subject, so we decided to tackle the issue head on by partnering with DS Smith for a truly circular solution.
On behalf of DS Smith, we are offering the coffee cup drop box to our customers as a way to effectively recycle not only coffee cups, but all manner of paper drinking cups.
As most of the country is all too aware, the UK does not have many facilities capable of recycling paper and coffee cups due to the thin line of polyethylene present inside. This is the material that helps keep your beverage warm and hands cool, though proves to be a nightmare to separate from the paper.
Because of the difficulties, less than 1 in 400 used cups (0.25%) are effectively recycled. Instead, 500,000 are thrown straight into landfill.
The coffee cup drop box provides a much-needed solution. We are now putting customers in touch with DS Smith to provide an all-inclusive service which will see their cups properly recycled at their paper mill in Kent.

Coffee grounds recycling.
We also turned our attention to a problem that may not be quite as well-known but is no less damaging to our environment: used coffee grounds.
Whether it’s at home, work or on-the-go, us Brits are keen coffee drinkers, so much so that it’s now not far behind tea as the nations’ favourite beverage.
Used coffee grounds that are collected because of this passion prove to be extremely damaging to our planet. Greenhouse gases such as methane are released, which is 28 times more dangerous than carbon dioxide.
In similar fashion to DS Smith, we have partnered with a company that provide a truly circular solution for our customers. First Mile offer an all-inclusive service that collects your used coffee grounds and recycles them for worthwhile purposes.
Their efforts save 80% of CO2 emissions. Learn more about this service here.
As we have proved through our partnerships with DS Smith and First Mile, Coinadrink is happy to work with external companies if we see a clear benefit in line with our sustainable goals.
But a lot of what has made our vending machine company successful over the years has been bespoke initiatives that set us apart from the competition. Our CSR efforts are just one example.
Our route planning software ties into our replenishment software nicely. This tailored approach helps to provide an excellent service that we pride ourselves on, but it also helps us meet our sustainable goals.
No products are carried on the vans unless they are needed in customer machines, which we know through real-time purchasing habits and trends. This saves weight, which in turns boosts efficiency.
We have also repeatedly refined the routes our engineers and operators must take to reduce miles, all without affecting the overall service our customers receive.
Then there’s our equipment. Coinadrink is in a unique position of not being tied down to any particular supplier, so we are free to cherry pick exactly what we want to offer our customers.
There are lots of characteristics we look for. In addition to quality, we select our vending machines for reliability and efficiency. Faults and downtime are no good for us as well as being no good for the customer and increase the likelihood of a machine needed to be discarded of too early into its lifecycle.
Coinadrink handles its own approved refurbishment process that our customers can access if they’re looking for a more cost-effective solution. We also work with an external supplier here if the level of maintenance requires it.
This is just another way that we ensure of maximum longevity for our vending machine and refreshment equipment.
Finally, all our customers are encouraged to utilise the designated recycling and waste streams we have available on site.
